ABU DHABI WORLD PROFESSIONAL JIU-JITSU CHAMPIONSHIP SPARKS INTO LIFE WITH JAW-DROPPING OPENING CEREMONY

Abu Dhabi, UAE – 19th April 2016: The IPIC Arena was alive with the cheers of fans today as the eighth annual Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, sparked into life with a jaw-dropping opening ceremony, marking the start of the extended five-day competition.

The opening day of the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship was honoured by the attendance of Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa bin Sultan bin Shakhbout Al Nahyan, Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikh Diab bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikh Mohammed bin Mansour Al Nahyan, Sheikh Zayed bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Sheikh Zayed bin Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa bin Sultan bin Shakhbout Al Nahyan, Sheikh Khalifa bin Sultan bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nayan, Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Sheikh Zayed bin Hamad bin Mohammed bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Sheikh Saqr bin Omar Al Qassimi and Sheikh Tariq bin Faisal bin Khalid Al Qassimi.

Whipping up a storm in the global capital of Jiu-Jitsu, the opening ceremony saw local musicians, 4 different talented dance performances as well as youth represented by special soloists. The exceptional opening ceremony signified the start of five days of world class professional Jiu-Jitsu competition from across the globe.

Getting down to the action on the mat, fans were treated to an incredible display of Jiu-Jitsu, with male and female players competing in the White belt category with Open Weight and male players in the Masters 1 category for Blue and Purple belts with Open Weight.

Representing their country in the mat the players from Kazakhstan dominated competition for the day with a grand total of 13 medals – including 7 Gold, 4 Silver and 2 Bronze. The players representing the UAE were roared on by home crowds and the home advantage paid its dues as they took home an impressive 4 Gold, 3 Silver and 5 Bronze medals.

Commenting on day one of competition in the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship, Abdulmunam Al Hashemi, Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, President of the Asian Jiu-Jitsu Federation and Vice President of the Jiu-Jitsu International Federation, said:

“After such an incredible display of skill and courage in the Abu Dhabi World Jiu-Jitsu Youth Championship it fills us at the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation with pride to welcome the world’s greatest Jiu-Jitsu players to the mat for a further five days of awe-inspiring competition. On day one of the Championship we have already witnessed so much excitement on and off the mat, with the opening ceremony setting the stage for what is the biggest and best Championship to date. The atmosphere in the IPIC Arena has been electric from the first day and this demonstrates the incredible growth in popularity of the sport in the region, making this Championship one of the top sporting events in the region.”

He added: “As players from more than 100 nationalities represented their country on the mat, fans from across the globe cheered them from the stand. With so many cultures from across the world coming together in this one moment at the IPIC Arena we celebrate culture and heritage as the theme for the day, and give fans the opportunity to learn so much more about the people they are sharing these unforgettable moments with. We hope that by doing this that Jiu-Jitsu and the UAE can be recognised as a hub for bringing people together through sport.”

With four more days of intense competition still to come in the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship the best is yet to come for the fans with more medals and more glory there for the taking.
