LANDMARK EIGHTH ANNUAL ABU DHABI WORLD PROFESSIONAL JIU-JITSU CHAMPIONSHIP GOES OUT ON A HIGH AS FANS CELEBRATE AS UAE NATIONAL STAR YAHYA AL HAMMADI

Abu Dhabi, UAE – 23 April 2016: As the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2016, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, came to a close on a rousing final day of competition, fans, players and members of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation set the competition energy into a frenzy at the IPIC Arena in the global capital of Jiu-Jitsu.

The final day of the Championship was honoured by the attendance of His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

In what was the biggest and best Championship to date, day five of competition in the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship saw non-stop action from the first minute to the last. With the introduction of the inaugural legends series to the final days’ play, fans were treated to a showcase of Jiu-Jitsu mastery as six Legends of the sport took to the mat in three matches which saw American Alexandre 'Soca' Freitas, Brazilian Vitor ‘Shaolin’ Ribeiro and Brazilian Marcio ‘Pe De Pano’ Cruz walk away victorious in the lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight divisions respectively.

On the Open Weight action, Brazilian Felipe Pena secured the Black belt gold medal and World Championship belt, while fellow Brazilian Tayane Araujo not only secured gold in the Brown belt, 70kg, but also took home a belt in the Open Weight female Black/Brown belt.

Stepping out onto the mat alongside the Legends on the final day were competitors in the Black Belt Finals, Youth Finals, play-offs and the Open Weight Finals, which saw fans rejoicing as the UAE put in another strong performance to emerge victorious with wins in the 3rd place finals and impressive showings from the UAE National Team as Faisal Al Ketbi secured bronze in the Black Belt under 94kg category and Yahya Al Hammadi secured the gold and became World Champion in the Brown Belt 94+kg category.

The final day of competition brought to a close the biggest and best Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship to date with fans and players alike being treated to unforgettable moments of brilliance in the global capital of Jiu-Jitsu. Commenting on the eighth annual Championship and its unquestionable success, Abdulmunam Al Hashemi, Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, President of the Asian Jiu-Jitsu Federation and Vice President of the International Jiu-Jitsu Federation, said:

“On day one of competition in the Abu Dhabi World Jiu-Jitsu Youth Championship we were exposed to some world class action by future stars of the sport and we couldn’t have imagined what was to come. When play commenced in the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship we were truly humbled by the masterclass that was set before us and those fans that attended will have lifelong memories of both the on- and off-the-mat action.”

Al Hashemi added: “We hope that we have set a precedent for the sport of Jiu-Jitsu around the world, and that the UAE will not only be recognised as a great sporting nation but as a leader in a wide array of sectors. We now look forward to the final awards ceremony that takes place tomorrow, and to celebrating the deserving competitors that triumphed against all odds at the eighth annual Abu Dhabi World Jiu-Jitsu Youth Championship and the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship.”

As the curtain comes down on the eighth annual Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2016 the official medals standings are exemplary of just how incredible the expanded five day Championship has been.
